Chapter 3
Rewiring Your Mindset
Get out of your comfort zone, focus on strengths, and learn to say no.
You are who you were before, shaping who you'll be tomorrow.
Your personal experience shapes your mindset in a unique way. If you want to become more focused, you need to start by rewiring your mindset. This means challenging negative beliefs and assumptions and replacing them with more empowering ones.
Let's try to understand by an example. If you believe that you're not good at something, you're less likely to be good at it. But if you can rewire your mindset to believe that you are capable and worthy, you'll be more likely to face it and make progress.
Most of the things we want to do, achieve are too sensitive to our thoughts. You can simply accept that I'm not ready, I don't have courage, I'm not skilled enough. And that mindset is enough to discourage you from starting anything. do nothing and be comfortable with it.
Getting out of your Comfort Zone
It's not easy to step outside of our comfort zone. In fact, it's hard to motivate ourselves to do anything that feels uncomfortable. But if we want to grow and achieve our goals, it's essential to push ourselves beyond our limits.
I recently experienced this myself when I decided to write my first ebook on graphic design. I had never written a book before, and I wasn't sure if I had the skills or the confidence to do it. But I knew that it was something I wanted to do, so I challenged myself to try.
I'm so glad that I did. Writing the ebook was a lot of hard work, but it was also incredibly rewarding. I learned a lot about myself and about the process of writing and publishing an ebook. And I'm proud to say that the ebook has been well-received by readers.
Even though I am not an experienced writer myself, I made my ebook free for everyone, and it has been downloaded more than 500 times. This shows that there is a demand for information on this topic, and that people are willing to read my work even though I am not a professional writer.
If you're thinking about stepping outside of your comfort zone, here are a few tips:
- Start small. Don't try to do too much too soon. Start by taking small steps outside of your comfort zone. For example, if you're afraid of public speaking, start by giving short presentations to small groups of people.
- Find a support system. Having friends, family members, or colleagues who support you can make a big difference. Talk to them about your goals and ask them for help and encouragement.
- Celebrate your successes. Every time you step outside of your comfort zone, take the time to celebrate your success. This will help you to stay motivated and keep moving forward.
Remember, getting out of your comfort zone is not about being perfect. It's about challenging yourself and growing as a person. So don't be afraid to make mistakes. Just learn from them and keep moving forward. I believe that getting out of your comfort zone is essential for success in all areas of life. When you step outside of your comfort zone, you open yourself up to new opportunities and experiences. You also learn to overcome your fears and doubts.
If you're looking to achieve your goals and live your best life, I encourage you to get out of your comfort zone today. You won't regret it.
Focus on your strengths
Do you know your strengths and weaknesses clearly?
You might know a few, but there is always more to discover. Strengths and weaknesses are our abilities and inability to do things. We often focus on our weaknesses, or we are unable to identify them at all.
Here are a few tips to help you identify your strengths and weaknesses:
- Reflect on your past experiences. Think about your successes and struggles in school, work, sports, and your personal life.
- Ask others for feedback. Your supervisor, mentor, and peers can offer valuable insights into your strengths and weaknesses.
- Take personality assessments. There are many online and offline assessments that can help you identify your strengths and weaknesses.
Initially you might have too many weaknesses. If you ask me, my strength is Critical Thinking and my weakness is Logical Thinking. We all lack something and have something that makes us different.
Good news is, It's an ongoing process so, your weaknesses can be your strengths if you work on them and likewise your strengths can be your weaknesses if you don't focus on it. To strengthen you can practice everyday.
Learn to say no
When you say yes to something you don't want to do, you're saying no to something you do want to do. You're setting yourself up for resentment and disappointment.
I learned this firsthand when I was offered many opportunities to work on startups and projects. At first, I said yes to everything because I thought I needed to make money. But eventually, I realized that I wasn't enjoying it or that I didn't want to do it. I had done so many things because I couldn't say no at first. But how could I decline an offer before me? I truly honored the offer, but the thing is, don't do something you don't feel like doing.
In the last six months, I've probably declined many offers for part-time jobs or projects. I'm glad those people needed me, but I want to do many things myself. These days, I'm kind of doing what I want to do.
My mindset is that I want to build and create things on my own, which don't necessarily have to be a business. I want to build software, do design and write books. Because I was able to say no, I am now able to:
- Build multiple projects at Mixim Agency with talented friends
- Complete an online graphic design course
- Given a video editing workshop
- Write this very book
You may not be able to say no to everything, especially if it directly impacts your income or something else important. But consider your options carefully, and if saying no is more reasonable, simply say no. People will understand.
We cannot change who we are instantly. It takes time to understand things and that's perfectly ok. If you think you're lacking something then it's time to rewire your mindset.
